Hotels near Freeport's Nautical Mile

A trip to Freeport's Nautical Mile is one that is certainly worthwhile. If you have never been here, or if it has been a while since your last visit, start making plans to spend some time here this year. Gone are the days of overhead utility wires and poles. The wires have been buried underground, eliminating the need for utility poles. Antique-style street lamps offer a more attractive alternative. The street has been raised as part of the Village of Freeport's effort to alleviate persistent flooding, as well as to improve the aesthetics of the waterfront. They have successfully accomplished both of these objectives.

Brick sidewalks are accompanied by flower planters, as well as benches to relax along the way. There is also an esplanade and scenic pier, both offering great views of the hustle and bustle of Woodcleft Canal. The sidewalk on the canal side is promenade-style, which provides ample room. This comes in handy, especially on summer weekends, when the street is packed with locals and tourists alike. This is the time that the Nautical Mile really comes to life with live music at the outdoor bar/clubs. The party boats begin pulling out of port, the restaurants and cafes become crowded. There is certainly a very festive atmosphere that permeates Woodcleft Avenue. The outdoor bar/clubs remain open into the wee hours of the morning, allowing revelers to lose themselves, if only for a few hours more. The summer season kicks into full swing the weekend preceding Memorial Day.

The Nautical Mile has become more family-friendly, with the 2004 opening of the very popular 18-hole Crow's Nest Mini Golf course. This means fun for kids and adults alike. A new 4-acre waterfront park and transient marina named Sea Breeze consisting of a boardwalk, benches, rest rooms, showers and boat slips at the end of Woodcleft Avenue has recently been completed. This has become a very popular spot to relax, fish, walk the docks, or just watch the passing boats. There is a myriad of things for one to do here. In addition to the above, enjoy cruising, dining, shopping and more. Let's not forget about the off-shore casino yacht.
